Lisa Mahon Receives 2014 Member Assistance Award

by Jason Faucera

OCEAN has been in existence since 1992. Developed as an employee association it’s main goals were to be a voice for employees, and to centralize resources that were important and applicable to district employees throughout Oregon. OCEAN still functions under the premise that there is nobody better to assess and fill district employee needs than district employees. We are a strong and diverse group, and OCEAN relies on that diversity and willingness to help fellow districts to deliver services like CONNECT.

OCEAN Assistance Award

OCEAN Assistance Award

The Member Assistance Award was developed to be able to honor those who are committed to helping individual districts to the benefit of all districts. Lisa Mahon of the Wallowa SWCD was awarded the 2014 Member Assistance Award because she works tirelessly to ensure that all districts have access to the same services, regardless of the resources they have available at the local level.

Lisa has been OCEAN’s secretary since the 2010 Annual Meeting at CONNECT. While districts were integral in the planning of the first two CONNECT conferences, ODA was not going to be able to plan CONNECT 2011 due to staffing changes. Lisa was one of the main advocates for OCEAN taking ownership for planning CONNECT. She has been the backbone of CONNECT since, and without her leadership, CONNECT may not have survived. She is a fierce advocate for ensuring that CONNECT remains accessible for all district employees, keeping the registration costs low through scholarships and by acquiring affordable services through an intensive venue selection process.

She spends countless hours negotiating with vendors and venues, all the while remaining an active board member. She is a member of the finance and communications committees, and is spearheading the development of OCEAN’s 501(c)3 application process that will make more resources available to provide services to districts. She is a walking, talking example of the power of district employees, and an invaluable OCEAN member.

Please join us in congratulating Lisa Mahon, the 2014 recipient of the OCEAN Member Assistance Award.
